Employers
who run misdemeanor checks are better informed
to make sound decisions regarding the acceptance
or rejection an applicant. As many as one in
four applicants don't tell the whole truth on
their job applications.
The word misdemeanor means, more or less
miss-deed or an ill-conceived deed. In most law
books, it is simply a minor offence against
another person. Varying degrees of theft, minor
assault, minor drug offences, things of that
sort. The punishment for these range from small
fines at one end to time in a county
penitentiary at the other. While most consider
these types of crimes trivial, if there is an
individual has a record of repeat offences, such
as numerous priors for petty theft, or
possession of drugs, it might point to more than
a few ungainly mistakes. More often than most
would like to admit, crimes such as these go
unpunished. For every time someone is caught,
there are often one or more times they got away
with. This could be a dangerous pattern to have
in an employee. Someone found guilty of
possession of controlled substances, or
possession with intent to sell may make a less
than adequate pharmacist. This type of thing can
be avoided, however, with simple misdemeanor
checks. Those maybe not as serious as rape or
arson, these convictions carry the weight of
consequences, and must be taken into account.
A company who does not check its employees for
such things is asking for damage on a financial
and reputable level. Such checks are less time
consuming and more convenient than extensive
background checks, but are often useful and
relevant.
